명철(בִּינָה binah)은 표면 아래의 본질을 파악하는 통찰력이다. 이사야가 예언한 메시아 위에 임하는 영은 '지혜와 총명의 영, 모략과 재능의 영'(사 11:2)이며, 다니엘은 하나님이 '지혜자에게 지혜를, 총명한 자에게 지식을' 주신다고 고백한다(단 2:21).

Etymology

折(꺾을 절, 手+斤) + 口(입 구) — 손(手)으로 도끼(斤)를 써서 잘라내듯 명확하게 분별하는 입(口)의 지혜. 사물의 본질을 꿰뚫어 밝히는 명철함

說文: 知也。從口折聲。
